Maintaining feedstock gas quality

An exceptionally flexible material, polyethylene is widely used in consumer and industrial applications around the world. It is produced by polymerizing the gas ethylene. The ethylene feedstock is treated to remove moisture and other residual gases, and combined with hydrogen and a co-monomer in a reaction system. The quality of these feedstock gases is essential to process efficiency and to protect the expensive catalyst from trace contamination.

Measurements for safety and purity

The primary contaminants present in the polyethylene production process are oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2). It is also important to monitor O2 for safety. Polymerization is a highly exothermic reaction, so it requires continuous cooling to prevent undesirable side-reactions, creating a challenging environment for gas analysis. Additionally, the product stream requires accurate gas analysis – including the measurement of total hydrocarbons – to ensure safety in the headspace by ensuring the concentration stays below its lower explosive limit.
