SERVOTOUGH Laser 3 Ammonia

We provide a complete solution for accurate ammonia slip control

Using advanced Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) technology, the SERVOTOUGH Laser 3 Plus Environmental is designed to help operators take control of combustion emissions by delivering accurate NH3 measurements in DeNOx processes. Supported by its auto-validation software capabilities, the analyzer also helps maintain the necessary uptime to overcome the regulatory challenges of CEMS applications and comply with EPA PS18 for NH3.

Gas analysis supports efficient combustion DeNOx applications

It is important to effectively control NOx through ammonia (NH3) slip to meet legislative requirements and avoid fines. This also improves combustion efficiency, reducing fuel costs and harmful emissions. High levels of unreacted NH3 are costly, and may also have a significant impact on deposition and catalyst plugging, as well as potential corrosion of downstream equipment.

Continuous analysis to control NH3 emissions

There is a growing demand to continuously measure the amount of NH3 released at a plant stack as a precursor to particulate matter of 2.5 microns. In the US, it is recommended that operators ensure their optical-based analyzers and systems meet EPA performance specification 18 (PS18). This makes uptime an essential consideration for NH3-based CEMS applications.

In this episode, application experts discuss gas analysis for continuous ammonia (NH3) monitoring in combustion emissions.

DeNOx Processes and the Crucial Role of Measuring Ammonia Slip

In the contemporary age of increasing environmental consciousness, the reduction of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions is becoming an essential requirement. NOx, a collective term for nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), is produced when excess nitrogen and oxygen react during combustion, particularly at high temperatures. The effective control of NOx emissions is critical not only to meet legislative requirements and avoid fines but also to enhance the efficiency of a combustion process.

The typical method for eliminating waste NOx in power plants and other combustion processes, also known as the DeNOx process, involves selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR). Both these methods use ammonia (NH3) or NH3 in the form of urea, which reacts with NOx on a catalyst surface to form water (H2O) and nitrogen (N2). However, maintaining optimal conditions is crucial to avoid surplus unreacted NH3, also known as ammonia slip.

The accurate measurement of ammonia slip is essential for several reasons, including cost efficiency, impact on downstream equipment, and diagnostic information about the SCR/SNCR system’s functioning. Yet, due to factors like the reactive nature of NH3, the presence of sulfur dioxide (SO2), water (H2O), and dust, measuring ammonia slip has been challenging.

Tunable Diode Laser Sensing: A Superior Solution for NH3 Measurement

Advanced Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) technology offers an effective solution for accurate ammonia slip control. It involves a diode laser light source, transmitting and receiving optics, and a detector, allowing in-situ, cross-duct measurements. This technology enables the calculation of gas concentration from the gas absorption line shape. As a result, TDL provides more accurate and average concentration readings compared to extractive methods. Moreover, the TDL method eliminates complications such as contaminant problems posed by dust, heat, and water, thus reducing downtime required for cleaning extractive systems.

SERVOTOUGH Laser 3 Ammonia

Servomex’s Next-Generation Solution for NH3 Measurements

Leveraging TDL technology, the SERVOTOUGH Laser 3 Plus Environmental (Laser 3 Plus deNOx ammonia) is designed to deliver accurate NH3 measurements in DeNOx processes. This compact gas monitor can be installed directly into process ducts, ideal for monitoring ammonia slip during NOx reduction processes like SCR or SNCR. In addition to the non-depleting measurement offered by TDL technology, the Laser 3 Plus Environmental provides industry-leading installation flexibility with cost and performance benefits.

Measuring NH3 in CEMS Applications

In the United States, the demand for continuous measurement of NH3 released at plant stacks is growing, despite the absence of national regulation by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Certain states have begun setting their own performance requirements, like California, which is considering lower NOx emissions limits and additional NH3 limits. The EPA strongly recommends adherence to performance specification 18 (PS18), intended for all future regulations for optical-based analyzers used in continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS). Furthermore, regulatory obligations necessitate high uptime of the CEMS equipment, and any unreported data can lead to severe fines.

Advantages of the SERVOTOUGH Laser 3 Plus Environmental (Laser3 Plus deNOx ammonia) in CEMS Applications

The Laser 3 Plus Environmental’s reliable performance (Laser3 Plus deNOx ammonia), combined with its auto-validation software capabilities, makes it an ideal solution for meeting the rigorous regulatory requirements of CEMS applications. It offers low maintenance and operational costs, leading to a low lifetime ownership cost, while providing uptime higher than 90%. Furthermore, Servomex provides comprehensive support, including a hot-swap program for rapid replacements.
