Our range of methane gas analyzers provides accurate monitoring of CH4 in your process, using a variety of sensing technologies to deliver the best measurement results for each application. We offer the SERVOTOUGH SpectraExact 2500 and Laser 3 Plus Combustion as hazardous area methane testers, and a number of safe area SERVOPRO analyzers for industrial gas and purity applications. These include the MultiExact 4100, MultiExact 4200, HFID, Chroma, NanoChrome, and NanoChrome ULTRA gas analyzers. For CEMS applications, we have the 4900 Multigas, rounding off a comprehensive set of solutions for methane gas analysis.

Why measure methane?

Methane is a hydrocarbon, and the main constituent of natural gas. As a greenhouse gas, methane emissions must be monitored in industrial processes to meet regulatory requirements. Monitoring methane in combustion is also an important safety measure. It is also key to safety and process efficiency in a number of industrial processes, including ethylene and EDC manufacture. Additionally, methane can contaminate high-purity gases needed for medical or industrial use, so must be monitored at trace and ultra-trace levels to ensure gas quality.

Measuring methane for safety in combustion

Fired heaters running in a steady state are very safe, and can be trimmed and controlled by measuring oxygen and combustible concentrations. However, changes to the ambient conditions, fuel composition, or pressure regulation can snuff out the flame or alter its profile to become heavily fuel-rich. These changes can create a pocket of methane on a bank of two or three burners, inside a working process. Normally undetected by point measurements, this potentially leads to a flood of methane coming up through the process. By measuring methane across the process using a Tunable Diode Laser analyzer – such as the SERVOTOUGH Laser 3 Plus Combustion – a bank or array of burners going out can be rapidly detected, allowing immediate corrective action.

How CH4 gas analyzers work to measure methane

Several sensing technologies are available to measure methane. The most appropriate solution depends on the application, and the measurement range required.

  • Gas Filter Correlation sensing is an advanced Infrared-based measurement technology based on the unique light-absorbing properties of some gases, delivering a non-contact, real-time detection of the selected gas’s concentration in a mixture.
  • Tunable Diode Laser sensing is highly specific to the target gas, and offers a fast, highly stable, continuous cross-stack measurement, ideal for process and combustion control applications.
  • Gas Chromatography separates out the constituent components of a gas mixture, allowing relative concentrations to be determined. Under optimized conditions, it can measure down to parts-per-billion (ppb) levels, making it ideal for high-purity control processes.
  • Servomex’s Plasma emission detection technology was developed to provide a safer alternative to flame-based sensing for hydrocarbon analysis, and delivers ultra-low measurements. It provides highly sensitive and selective speciation, so is only suitable for trace analysis applications.
  • Flame Ionization Detector (FID) technology is designed to measure total hydrocarbons down to parts-per-billion (ppb) levels. By combining a FID sensor with a non-methane cutter, it can be used to measure methane concentrations as well.

Our solutions for Methane gas analysis

We support many applications with methane gas analysis solutions, ranging from power generation and hydrocarbon processing (HP) to medical gas purity and semiconductor gas quality. For power, HP, and emissions, our methane analyzers include the SERVOTOUGH SpectraExact 2500 and SERVOPRO analyzers such as the MultiExact 4100, MultiExact 4200, HFID, and 4900 Multigas. These methane gas analyzers use Gas Filter Correlation or Flame Ionization Detector sensing to measure CH4. For the trace and ultra-trace measurements of methane required by industrial, medical, and UHP gases, Gas Chromatography and Plasma sensing technologies are required. We provide the Chroma, NanoChrome, and NanoChrome ULTRA analyzers.
