Nitrous oxide (N2O) has a wide range of uses from medical gases to acting as a propellant. It has toxic properties, so emissions must be monitored by a nitrous oxide detector for safety purposes, as well as product quality in high-purity nitrous oxide gas production.
Commonly known as ‘laughing gas’, nitrous oxide has been used as an anesthetic, pain relief, and anti-anxiety medication for more than 200 years. It is also used in the food industry to manufacture whipped cream and other food aerosols, and in vehicles as an engine accelerant. The production of high-purity nitrous oxide gas is, therefore, a key application in both the medical and industrial gas sectors, and requires accurate, reliable nitrous oxide measurement. While product purity is important, the possible toxic effects of long-term or high-concentration exposure to N2O also make nitrous oxide monitoring essential for safety.
Servomex’s analyzers rely on the Gas Filter Correlation (GFC) sensing technology to accurately measure N2O concentrations. GFC is an advanced Infrared sensing technology that uses the property of gases to absorb unique light wavelengths to detect the concentration of a selected gas in a mixture. For N2O, it measures concentrations at ppm levels.
