Propane (C3H8) is a hydrocarbon and one of the group of liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs). It can be produced as a by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining, so may require monitoring for process control. Propane is commonly used as a feedstock for the production of base petrochemicals such as propylene. In these cases, measuring propane purity, using an effective propane gas monitor, is essential to ensure process efficiency and a high-quality product. Propane may also need to be monitored for safety, as it can pose an explosion risk in some processes.
The propane dehydrogenation process is used to convert propane into propylene – a fundamental component of the widely used polypropylene plastic, with hydrogen as a by-product. Propane measurements are required at the beginning and end of the process. A SpectraExact 2500 measures percent-level propane in the fresh propane feed to ensure purity. At the end of the process, a propylene-propane splitter is used to separate the required product from propane that can be recycled back into the process. A second SpectraExact 2500 monitors this split by measuring percent-level propane, protecting product quality and ensuring effective recycling.
The SpectraExact 2500 uses photometric sensing technologies to measure propane in the range required for the specific application.
Designed for demanding process applications, the rugged and versatile SERVOTOUGH SpectraExact 2500 delivers propane gas analysis capability for flammable sample streams, using Infrared and Gas Filter Correlation sensing.
A highly flexible analytical solution adaptable to many applications, the SERVOTOUGH SpectraExact 2500 delivers proven performance and flexible operation in a resilient and reliable design.
It adapts to your process effortlessly to deliver a real-time online monitoring solution configurable to measure a wide range of components including percent-level propane. Field mounting capabilities enable flexible use in the harshest process conditions.
Highly affordable, the SpectraExact 2500 uses an intelligent design and non-depleting sensing technologies to help to extend maintenance intervals and dramatically reduce ongoing costs.
Our propane analyzer range uses proven sensing solutions that deliver accuracy, ease of use, and a long operational life.
An advanced form of Infrared sensing, Gas Filter Correlation (GFC) technology is ideal in applications with interferent background gases, delivering precise, sensitive measurements. It is used in our SERVOTOUGH SpectraExact 2500 photometric analyzer, and is a key technology for our SERVOPRO multi-gas analyzers, the MultiExact 4100, MultiExact 4200, and 4900 Multigas.

Infrared sensing is a flexible measurement technology based on the unique light-absorbing properties of some gases. It delivers a non-contact, real-time detection of the selected gas’s concentration in a mixture, and is widely used in our analyzer range, including portable analyzers, photometric products, and multi-gas analyzers.
