Why measure propane?

Propane (C3H8) is a hydrocarbon and one of the group of liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs). It can be produced as a by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining, so may require monitoring for process control. Propane is commonly used as a feedstock for the production of base petrochemicals such as propylene. In these cases, measuring propane purity, using an effective propane gas monitor, is essential to ensure process efficiency and a high-quality product. Propane may also need to be monitored for safety, as it can pose an explosion risk in some processes.

Propane measurement in propane dehydrogenation

The propane dehydrogenation process is used to convert propane into propylene – a fundamental component of the widely used polypropylene plastic, with hydrogen as a by-product. Propane measurements are required at the beginning and end of the process. A SpectraExact 2500 measures percent-level propane in the fresh propane feed to ensure purity. At the end of the process, a propylene-propane splitter is used to separate the required product from propane that can be recycled back into the process. A second SpectraExact 2500 monitors this split by measuring percent-level propane, protecting product quality and ensuring effective recycling.

How propane gas analyzers work to measure C3H8

The SpectraExact 2500 uses photometric sensing technologies to measure propane in the range required for the specific application.

  • Gas Filter Correlation sensing is an advanced Infrared-based measurement technology based on the unique light-absorbing properties of some gases, delivering a non-contact, real-time detection of the selected gas’s concentration in a mixture.
  • Infrared sensing is a flexible measurement technology based on the unique light-absorbing properties of some gases, delivering a non-contact, real-time detection of the selected gas’s concentration in a mixture.
