In power plants and various other combustion processes, the removal of nitrogen oxides from exhaust gases is typically achieved by selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR).
NH3 is injected into the flue gas stream through combustion, where it reacts with NOx to form water (H2O) and nitrogen (N2). Unreacted NH3 is often referred to as ammonia slip and is typically kept to < 2 parts per million (ppm) to optimize the process.
In addition, US EPA PS18 has established standards for reliable CEMS monitoring of NH3 as a precursor of harmful particulate matter.
There are also some chemical manufacturing processes—such as those for ethylene and ethylene dichloride—where monitoring ammonia levels is critical for safety, efficiency, and quality control.

Accurately measuring ammonia slip is crucial for the operation of denitrification equipment. Large amounts of unreacted NH3 are both wasteful and expensive, while ammonia slip can also have a significant impact on deposits and catalyst plugging. It also impacts the potential corrosion of downstream equipment.
Excessive ammonia slip in coal-fired power plants produces fly ash with high concentrations of NH3, making it unsuitable for sale as a mineral filler in asphalt or cement plants.
The ammonia slip level also provides diagnostic information about the correct functioning of the SCR/SNCR system and the NOx reduction process.
By controlling ammonia leaks to < 2 ppm, processes can be optimized, providing operational, cost, and safety advantages. However, without direct measurement using an ammonia analyzer, this is difficult to control.

Advanced tunable diode laser (TDLAS) technology provides a complete and effective solution for precise ammonia slip control.
TDLAS technology, consisting of a tunable diode laser light source, transmitting optics, receiving optics, and a detector, is suitable for in-situ, cross-pipeline measurements. Because the analyzer is mounted on the duct or stack, it produces an average concentration reading, rather than a point reading obtained from an extracted sample, providing a more definitive measurement of NH3 concentration levels.
The NH3 sample also never leaves the process, thus avoiding the complexities of sample transportation experienced in extraction methods, as well as contamination issues caused by dust, heat, and water.
This means not only are measurements more accurate, but plant operators avoid much of the downtime required to clean the extraction system.

The SERVOTOUGH Laser 3 Plus Ammonia is a revolution in tunable diode laser (TDLAS) absorption spectroscopy: a highly compact ammonia analyzer suitable for in-situ installation, offering outstanding performance advantages for clean air processes.
It installs directly in the process piping and is ideal for monitoring ammonia slip in NOx reduction processes such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) or Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR), controlling ammonia slip levels to between 2-3 parts per million.
