Work experience

During your work experience you will gain first hand knowledge of the range of career opportunities our diverse industry has to offer.

If you enjoy studying science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM), at Servomex you will see how STEM subjects are applied to the real world.  Although, Servomex is a Global Gas Analysis company focusing in engineering, we do offer work experience in a variety of different departments such as finance, Marketing, Manufacturing and Customer Service.

There is no better place to learn and experience being part of a team.

What to expect from your time with Servomex

Get ready to dive into the world of engineering! Our work experience programme gives you hands-on exposure to four exciting areas: mechanical design, electronics and circuit building, programming, and real-world troubleshooting.

You’ll explore how light can be used to measure gases in the environment—a cool concept called spectroscopy. To bring this to life, you’ll:

  • Design a slide that holds different coloured filters
  • Build a circuit that switches coloured LEDs on and off
  • Create software that controls the lights and turns the data into real measurements

Along the way, you’ll also tour different parts of our production area and discover a wide range of career paths—not just in engineering, but across the business.

It’s a chance to experiment, create, and see how engineering shapes the world around us.

Work experience is available to anyone who has not yet started higher education.

Applications for 2026 open on the 1st of November 2025*, and our current availability for work experience is during the following dates:*

  • 9th – 13th February
  • 2nd – 6th March (FULL)
  • 13th – 17th July

I joined Servomex in 2019 as a V&V Engineer with a background in Product and software testing. Transitioning into a domain as specialized as gas analysis and TDLS spectroscopy was initially a challenge. However, Servomex’s inclusive and supportive culture made this transition not only manageable but deeply rewarding. From day one, I was encouraged by my team members and management to explore, learn, and grow. The welcoming environment and access to skilled mentors allowed me to quickly acquire domain expertise, complementing my existing testing skills.

In my day-to-day work, I lead testing activities, driving quality control throughout the development lifecycle, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure that we deliver high-quality products on time. I’ve come to understand that excelling in this role requires a balance of technical skills and domain knowledge, both of which I’ve developed here at Servomex. The trust and acknowledgement I’ve received for my contributions have boosted my confidence and inspired me to strive for excellence every day. Servomex supports me in many ways. This is principally shown in the company’s willingness to make reasonable workplace adaptations to my work setup, work pattern and work roles due to my deteriorating eyesight because of the serious eye condition I have. In fact, it started not by me raising an issue or asking for help, but with the Health and Safety officer encouraging me to contact Access to Work to see what they could advise to help me at work. Since that moment I have always felt valued and supported in helping me to perform at my best for Servomex. This has included, but is not limited to, paying for specialist software to enable me to read my screen more easily, giving me a 50 inch TV to be my monitor, allowing me flexible working hours to help with external limitations on my travel to work, and a desire to work with me to find suitable work roles to replace the lab work that I can no longer perform safely.

In addition to this, the kind, compassionate and supporting culture that Is totally genuine makes it easy for me to ask for help when I need it. I know it sounds like that should be normal, but I talk to others in similar situations to me at different companies and they do not get anywhere near the support that I have been blessed to receive at Servomex. This culture is only possible because it is genuine and is practiced by the senior leadership team, so the ethos filters down to all employees”.

I’m lucky enough to have a Servomex Mentor; someone I can discuss tricky issues with, understand how I can make better decisions, and get advice on how to move forward effectively with projects and plans.

I’m collaborative by nature and have found colleagues from all over the business to be supportive and engaged.  When I’ve needed data to support a business case, or when I’ve needed to get a sense check from someone working in a department I’m not so familiar with, they’ve been willing to support me, in addition to their daily work.  My background is not engineering, so I’ve delighted in learning from the experts on how our products measure gases to PPM, how we make tiny glass spheres in-house to support measurements, how our analyzers communicate and how oxygen is magnetic!

I’m someone that enjoys coming to the office to work.  I like being with my team and being there to support them, but equally I find it’s those ‘unplanned discussions’ in the kitchen or when someone stops by my desk that are really useful in my role – so that I hear what pain points people have that I might be able to help them with digital transformation.  I value the flexibility to work from home when I need to though.  When a bit of extra focus or quiet time is needed, I just let the team know they can get me on Teams and work from the garden office.

And I appreciate the opportunity to work with my manager to set my objectives for the year.  They will align with the Company Strategy and the Digital Transformation Strategy and that will help me focus on delivering them, but I can ensure they include my goals for development and those for the teams I manage too”.

“I joined Servomex in 1999 and have always found it to be an incredibly supportive company to work for, providing support in a multitude of ways.

Over the last decade I’ve received mentoring and been coached in leadership and management, enabling me to develop further personally, and support development of my team.

My experience of Servomex has also enabled me to work on a variety of exciting and challenging initiatives, sometimes directly related to my role, and sometime in different areas. For example, in work related to my role I’ve worked with many of the Spectris OpCo’s, travelling to their sites to exchange ideas, provide training, and develop joint initiatives around product development and product management. However, I’ve also worked on STEM outreach with schools, and more recently been able to act as an Ambassador for the Spectris Foundation supporting its STEM and Employee nominated charitable gifting work. Additionally, I’ve also been delighted to be involved with our Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging team and introduce an initiative to support young people with learning disabilities to gain work experience and employment at Servomex. This variety of experience, challenge and global engagement is hugely enriching and rewarding, and that supports my sense of well-being and the feeling that I can make a difference.

Finally, Servomex are also family and well-being focused. Family always comes first and in my experience the company supports its employees through life on a daily basis, and through tougher moments. From supportive team members to supportive management and signposting and access to support programs, Servomex has been there when I’ve needed it, and I’ve seen it go way above and beyond its obligations on many occasions to support its employees.

在仕富梅,有幸与诸多经验丰富,背景不同的机械工程师一起工作,让我有机会充实自己,拓展知识面,不断迎接挑战。哪怕数十年资历的元老都时常感叹在这里做工程很有趣,创新不止。仕富梅也从未让我失望,自任职以来,我对量子力学、激光以及工程和科学的各个领域都有了一定的了解。我很庆幸能加入这个大家庭。

典型的工作日常如何?

早上初来喝杯咖啡,这是惯例!或者先和同事聊聊天,然后开始设计工作。我当前的工作是为各种产品和制造项目提供支持,以及使用CAD软件Solidworks等生成3D和2D数据。白天可能会有一些会议、一般性讨论或临时的优先任务。我有一个项目在无尘室,因此有幸能进入生产车间,参与到生产线上,与其他部门协同工作。因为我是新人,公司总会提供一些浅显的阅读和工程知识,以便我能快速跟上进度。

你如何看待仕富梅文化?

非常友好和专业。管理层和同事们很支持我,还在百忙之中抽出时间帮助我。在我的部门,我能感觉到周围的人都努力,很注重公司荣誉,争做业内领导者。我有一个9个月大的儿子,所以工作与生活保持平衡非常重要,灵活的工作时间意味着我能在工作周多陪陪我的儿子Reuben。

我前一分钟与在中国的候选者进行Skype通话,下一秒可能就在英国培训中心 (UKTC) 组织面试。同一天上午,可能还要与目标候选者接触、编辑职位描述、筛选简历或与大学团队谈论他们的课程和学生。我与人才招聘团队的同事们紧密合作,以确保招聘政策和流程完整、高效,为候选者和同事们提供专业的招聘体验。
