SERVOPRO Chroma enables simultaneous hydrocarbon measurement in cryogenic ASU production
Crowborough, UK, 14 September 2010 - In combining the latest Plasma Emission Detector technology with improved operational and communications capabilities, the SERVOPRO Chroma from Servomex gives cryogenic ASU operators total flexibility in measuring hydrocarbons present in ambient air. read more...Constant hydrocarbon measurement is crucial in ASU production, as hydrocarbons that build up in the cryogenic portion of the process pose an explosion risk when mixed with enriched air or pure oxygen. Depending on the results of an ambient air test to determine the types and level of hydrocarbons present, plant operators must decide whether to measure for Total Hydrocarbons Measurement (THC), Methane and Non-Methane Hydrocarbons (CH4 & NMHC), or measure for individual hydrocarbons including Methane, Acetylene, Propane, Propylene, Ethane and Ethylene.
THC Measurement, where the variety of hydrocarbons in ambient air is limited, can be monitored using Flame Ionization Detector (FID) technology such as that provided by Servomex’s SERVOPRO FID. However when the ambient air at a plant contains a variety of hydrocarbons that have different Lower Explosive Limits (LEL), many operators choose to separate the total measurement into two measurements for Methane and Non-Methane Hydrocarbons. These measurements usually require setting separate trip points at which a plant can be shut down to avoid an explosion, with CH4 usually measured over a 0-100 ppm range and the lower-LEL NMHC measured over a 0-5 ppm range.
However if a plant trip point set for a FID analyser is based solely on a CH4 measurement range, the potential exists for Non-Methane Hydrocarbons to accumulate above their LEL and the possibility of dangerous operating conditions. Conversely, if a trip point is based on a lower NMHC ppm level, then the FID analyser may initiate an unnecessary and costly plant shutdown too early and too often as the safe CH4 level activates the lower NMHC trip point.
By housing two separate Plasma Emission Detectors, each with separate valve and column channels to individually and simultaneously measure CH4 and NMHC, the SERVOPRO Chroma is the complete solution for the coincident measurement of Methane and Non-Methane Hydrocarbons. As the Chroma’s Plasma technology requires only an Argon or Helium carrier gas to function, and does not require the constant flowing fuel gas required by FID detection techniques, installation costs - including the installation of shut off valves & LEL Gas Detectors - and overall cost-of-ownership for the Chroma is considerably reduced in comparison to using FID technologies for this application.
Servomex and Pensalab consolidate Petrobras relationship with Brazil training sessions
Crowborough, UK, 20 August 2010 - Servomex, the global leader in gas analysis, and Pensalab, a leading provider of industry-leading laboratory, analytical and online applications, have consolidated their growing relationship with Petrobras at a series of successful training workshops in Brazil. read more...Twenty engineers and managers from Brazil’s leading integrated energy company attended the Servomex Round Table Combustion seminar, which took place at two individual sessions in Rio De Janeiro and São Paulo in June 2010.

A wide range of additional topics were also covered, including maximising the benefits of ownership, practical discussions about the application of analysers to specific scenarios, as well as examining how Servomex and Pensalab can help Petrobras achieve its vision of setting the industry standards in safety, efficiency and social responsibility.
Throughout the workshop, Servomex was able to demonstrate its ability to deliver the complete solution to analysis requirements, an element emphasised by the presence of Dr Stephen Firth, Business Unit Manager for Servomex’s new Integrated Solutions division.
“The training sessions were positive and constructive, giving us the ability to position Servomex as a dedicated, credible business partner for Petrobras,” said Sean Casey, General Manager, Latin America.
“We are very fortunate to have the right partner in Pensalab, whose professionalism and commitment to the customer mirrors our own values.”
“The workshop was a great chance for both Pensalab and Servomex to showcase our experience and, most importantly, listen to and understand the customer’s expectations and needs,” says Anderson Rovadoschi, Online Manager, Pensalab.
“We at Pensalab are very motivated in working closely with Servomex and believe that this kind of partnership demonstrates the level of Servomex’s commitment towards customers, in line with Pensalab’s own strategic plan and vision for 2010-2014.”
In conclusion, the training sessions were agreed by all to have been a success – and commemorated with the presentation of replica Brazil football shirts to the Petrobras team. It may not have been quite enough to help their national team secure the world cup, but helped underline the training which has produced a winning solution for Petrobras.

Servomex Flowcube technology sets new benchmark in flow sensor measurement
Crowborough, UK, 18 June 2010 - Servomex has delivered a benchmark improvement to gas flow measurement and safety with the launch of Flowcube, a brand new sensor technology which integrates into its acclaimed analyser range. read more...Unlike thermal conductivity technologies and rotameters, which can be greatly affected by thermal conductivity changes in the sample gas and density and viscosity changes respectively, Flowcube technology measures the bulk cooling characteristic of the gas. The result is a stable measurement that does not respond predominately to one physical gas characteristic and is more immune to changes in the sample gas mixture. Positioned at the outlet of the measurement cell to guarantee a representative sample is present at all times, the Flowcube sensor ensures maximum measurement certainty and optimum safety to enable users to set user-defined alarm levels with confidence.
Flowcube technology therefore enables operators to implement a preventative rather than reactive agenda for analyser flow control, avoiding costly plant downtime by allowing the scheduling of routine safety checks and sample system maintenance – a particularly useful function where operations are being run with minimum personnel on-site. With no consumable parts, an almost indefinite field service life and no special gases or setup required, Flowcube delivers low cost-of-ownership with just a simple calibration procedure required at a minimum of twelve months. Flowcube is certified intrinsically safe (EEx ia) for use in hazardous areas and with continually flammable gases, and it forms part of the SERVOTOUGH Oxy SIL 2 assessment for use in Safety Integrated Systems.
“Flowcube is a prime example of how Servomex applies our technical and analytical expertise to solving real customer issues,” says Chris Cottrell, Managing Director, Servomex.
“Not only does it address a fundamental customer problem with the previously inflexible flow measurement techniques offered by our industry, but the improved alarm system and system trending measurements offer new and immediate benefits to customer operations.”
Flowcube will be available immediately as an option for the SERVOPRO MultiExact multigas analyser and award-winning SERVOTOUGH Oxy oxygen analyser, with compatibility for other Servomex analysers to follow.
For more information about Flowcube technology and Servomex’s extensive range of gas analysis products and solutions, contact the European Business Centre (+31 (0) 79 330 1581 / 00800 737866390 Toll free in France, Holland, Germany, Belgium and the UK) Americas Business Center (+1 281 295 5800) or Asia Pacific Business Centre (+86 (0)21 6489 7570).
