Servomex’s technical expertise recognised with ISA annual award
Crowborough, UK, 5 January 2010 - Servomex’s world-leading expertise in gas analysis has been recognised by the International Society of Automation’s Analytical Division (ISA-AD), following the presentation of a technical paper to the 53rd Analysis Division Symposium in 2009. read more...Servomex was awarded Second Place for Best Technical Paper in the 2009 Gilmer/Thomason/Fowler/Konrad award for “A Comparative Analysis Of The Errors In The Measurement Of Oxygen Between In-situ And Extractive Methods”, presented to the symposium in Houston by David Fahle, VP Hydrocarbon Processing - Americas.
Following the presentation to a peer group of more than 200 professionals working in multiple industries including hydrocarbon processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and power generation, the paper was voted second out of 32 submissions and was invited by ISA-AD to be presented again at the ISA EXPO conference in Houston in October.
Co-authored by Servomex technical experts James Hobby, Ian Gaskin, Richard Kovacich, Martin Lopez and Bahram Alizadeh, the paper reviews the emergence of new techniques for in-situ oxygen measurement that increases the range of methods available to the user, but for which there has previously been limited analysis of the actual errors present for both in-situ and traditional extractive methods.
By exploring the major contributory errors present in both cases, Servomex offers professionals interested in the selection of oxygen analysers a valuable increased understanding of the capabilities of the available techniques – enabling them to make more informed decisions about which methods would be most suitable for their process requirements.
“Congratulations to our technical team, who worked hard to create this authoritative paper that offers real benefit to anyone evaluating the wide range of oxygen analyser techniques now available,” said Chris Cottrell, Managing Director, Servomex.
“The bedrock of our expertise is the high level of dedicated technical and scientific research we undertake, so to have our leading position recognised by an organisation as respected as ISA is an honour.”
The award rounded off a successful year for Servomex which also saw the new SERVOTOUGH Oxy analyser awarded the Gold award in the 2009 Golden Gas awards.

Intertek makes safe choice in Servomex for ATEX testing
Crowborough, UK, 30 July 2009 - Absolute safety, accuracy and reliability is paramount for monitoring any hazardous combustion process, but never more so than when testing the safety of other equipment read more...When Intertek, a leading provider of safety testing solutions, needed to replace their decommissioned Servomex 1100 unit for their Global Explosive Atmosphere Testing Services based in Chester, UK, Servomex recommended the SERVOFLEX Micro i.s (5100 i.s): a single component, Intrinsically Safe portable gas analyser able to deliver flexible, reliable and accurate measurement in hazardous conditions.
An ATEX Notified Body for product testing, assessment, inspection and certification for all category 1 and 2 equipment, and offering a range of services including EX testing and certification CE, IECEx Testing and Certification (International) and Quality Management Systems, Intertek required a portable that could be moved and applied to a variety of test scenarios. By being built to a rugged, robust IP65 construction and optimised for portable use with an intuitive interface, user-configurable audible alarms and maximum memory storage of 200 measurements, the Micro i.s was therefore ideal for Intertek’s precise testing requirements.
Accuracy, stability and reliability is guaranteed using Servomex’s world-leading paramagnetic transducer technology – which offers selective measurement of oxygen without the disadvantages of electrochemical or zirconia cells – and single beam, single wavelength infrared technology to measure percent levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide respectively.
The Micro i.s is now used by Intertek to monitor and mix various explosive gas mixtures, introduced into a sample to test for propagation to the external atmosphere and to measure the internal explosive pressure generated. As the analyser is designed to monitor predominately explosive gases in air, the mix is adjusted by Intertek engineers and calculated using oxygen depletion as the gas is introduced. The Micro is also being used for testing purged cabinet processes, with the analyser set to measure oxygen levels within an enclosure as it is purged with gases such as nitrogen.
“We have been delighted by the performance of the Micro i.s in all the safety testing processes where it is required,” says Ian Clark, Approvals Engineer, Intertek.
“In terms of accuracy and reliability, as well as the practical considerations of portability, it delivers exactly what we need to the stringent standards we demand when we carry out our crucial safety tests.”
True portability for the Micro is ensured by the fitting of a carrying strap and optional soft carry case, while the flexibility of the unit is increased with options for a sample probe and pumped or non-pumped (AFCD) options – the pumped version benefiting from an optional sample conditioning kit if required. This ensures the Micro is ideal for applications where hazardous area combustion optimisation exists, including natural gas processing, catalytic cracker regeneration, Hyco applications, process monitoring and inerting applications.

Crowborough, UK, 15 April 2009 - Servomex’s world-leading expertise in monitoring combustion gases has been recognised by Drax Power Limited, which has ordered the installation of Servomex gas analysers to the UK’s cleanest and most coal-efficient power station read more...Eight SERVOTOUGH Fluegas (2700) units, optimised to measure both 02 and COe, have been installed to monitor the oxygen burn mix for the combustion boilers at Drax Power Station in Selby, Yorkshire. By monitoring combustion processes more closely, Drax engineers will be able to control the optimum burn mix more accurately, thus saving fuel, enabling considerable cost savings and further improving emissions quality.
Already replacing a range of competitor analysers at other coal-fired power stations, the SERVOTOUGH Fluegas combustion gas analyser is ideal for monitoring combustion processes by using a combination of a zirconium oxide cell for measuring oxygen and a patented 'thick film' catalytic sensor for combustibles such as CO equivalents and COe. The SERVOTOUGH Fluegas is accordingly designed for high temperature operation up to 1750°C (3182°F) with a range of applications in extreme heated environments including process heaters, utility boilers, thermal crackers and incinerators – and therefore ideal for monitoring the combustion process at Selby or other coal-fired power stations.
Servomex will also provide full service and support - including installation and commissioning - for the SERVOTOUGH Fluegas analysers, which replace competitor products that had become obsolete and unsupportable for the future.
“The performance, accuracy and reliability of the SERVOTOUGH Fluegas has established it as the industry choice for monitoring combustion processes, so with this installation Servomex is proud to actively contribute to Drax’s status as the cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power station in the UK,” says Chris Cottrell, Managing Director, Servomex.
“Servomex has been a pleasure to work with and the contract was professionally project managed with a flexible approach,” concludes Peter Muff, Project Manager, Drax Power.

SERVOTOUGH Oxy Wins Major Industry Award
Crowborough, UK, 9 March 2009 - Servomex’s new SERVOTOUGH Oxy oxygen analyser has been announced the winner of the prestigious Gold award in the Gas Analysis category of the 2009 Golden Gas Awards. read more...The Golden Gas Awards, sponsored and presented by Gases & Instrumentation International, a MetaWord Inc. premiere publication covering the technology of industrial, specialty and medical gases, attracted entries on new products from all major global gas technology manufacturers. With an exceptional range of industry-standard options and three unique, ground-breaking functions, the Oxy was submitted on the basis of setting new standards of flexibility, stability and reliability in single, cost-effective unit at a mid-range price point.
Each entry was rated by an independent panel of industry experts on five criteria, based on the product’s ability to: solve an important challenge to the gas industry; technological innovation; environmental “green” attributes; superior specifications in terms of power requirements, speed, footprint, portability and maintenance; cost effectiveness; and other quality considerations. The Oxy was able to demonstrate overwhelming advantages and innovations across all categories, with highlights including the specific environmental benefits of Servomex’s Pressure Sensing Compensation system, which directly reduces emissions targets by the ability to vent gases to flare stacks.
“Servomex is honoured to have been awarded this prestigious award for the Oxy, a product designed to maintain our leading edge in the innovation and manufacture of gas analysers,” says Chris Cottrell, Managing Director, Servomex.
“We pride our position as the global experts in gas analysis, so to have the Oxy’s market-leading capabilities acknowledged by an independent panel is very gratifying. Praxair Brazil benefits from new SERVOTECH Training Programme
Crowborough, UK, 23 February 2009 - Engineers can only be as good as the information and training they’re given, so Servomex had to supply the most up-to-date, relevant knowledge to Praxair’s operations in Brazil to ensure their gas analyser fleet maintains optimum performance. read more...A team of top service engineers undertook training at the White Martins gases facility in Santo André, Brazil as part of Servomex’s new SERVOTECH dedicated training programme. Replacing traditional training that delivers prescriptive information irrespective of client need, SERVOTECH builds the focus around the specific business and performance requirements of any engineering team.
The result was focused training, designed and delivered by Global Training Manager Stuart Rye, which ensured the team was guided through all relevant challenges that could be faced in maintaining operations specific to typical Praxair plants. In addition, Servomex needed to address the day-to-day realities for engineers operating in Brazil, given the demands placed on a small team by the considerable size and complicated geography of the country. Training therefore concentrated on optimising equipment performance and long-term maintenance solutions to avoid costly downtime, minimise unnecessary travel and maximise return on investment.
The training followed hot on the heels of a similar SERVOTECH session with US-based Praxair engineers at Servomex Americas Business Center in Sugar Land, Texas. The training proved so successful that an operator was even able to leave the session half-way to fix an offsite instrument with the knowledge he had learned during training.
“Servomex is not here for ‘the sale’, we’re here for the business solution that benefits a partnership,” says Claire Lucarino, VP Customer Support, Servomex Americas.
“The solution in this case was not “this is what Servomex does”, but “What does Praxair need?”, so we needed to build a platform in our training that said “We can do all this to help you.”
SERVOTECH training centres are also based in Shanghai, China for Asia Pacific customers while EMEA customers benefit from new facilities based at Servomex’s newly opened Technical Centre in the UK.
